HOW TO SUPPORT LOCAL IN MELBOURNE'S NORTH

Our Top 6 Local Melbourne Business to Support (Northside Edition)

If all the lockdowns we've gone through over the last year have taught us anything, it’s that community and connection matter. As a Melbourne small business that's been around since 2002, we've can really get behind the #supportlocal movement.

So we asked our Sales Manager, Nina Belic, to share a few of her must-visit local businesses around Melbourne's Northern suburbs. Most of Nina's days are spent frequenting Calmer Sutra's stockists, hand-delivering their orders and getting to know the humans behind these small businesses.

It was really hard to narrow them down to a select few (we're spoiled for choice in the North!), but here are Nina's top six picks for supporting local along with her favourite things to try while you're there...

 The Farm Cafe (Abbotsford)

Support Local Melbourne The Farm Cafe Abbotsford

The Farm Cafe is one of my favourite places to go to escape the city without actually leaving the city. Situated at Abbotsford Convent and along the Yarra River, this quaint cafe is surrounded by nature. With the adjoining Collingwood Children's Farm, it’s a great educational interactive place to take the kids. Most of the delicious produce served to you is directly harvested from the farm and if you're lucky enough to come on the right day you can buy some to take home.

Wild Things Food (Fitzroy North)

Support Local Melbourne Wild Things Food Fitzroy North

Wild Things Food is one of my favourite local grocers. When you walk in you're greeted by the cafe's vibrant display of veggie delights and it’s always a struggle picking which item to try! The range of food and produce available is extensive and you’ll find everything you need here. It has been carefully sourced ensuring that the farmer is getting a fair deal and that their production is as sustainable as possible. You can find three of our best selling fresh chai blends here too!

Kines (Brunswick)

Support Local Melbourne Kines Brunswick

Kines is my local cafe that I love walking down to to get a cup of our Vegan Chai, which they do exceptionally well. Sitting under the concert adorned with greenery, just watching the world go by. I also love picking up a jar of one of their delicious homemade fermented condiments or preserves to enjoy later.

The Botanical Store (Northcote)

Support Local Melbourne The Botanical Store Northcote

It’s such a joy walking into The Botanical Store. The aroma of essential oils hits you straight away and tantalises every sense. With over 10 years of experience, they really know what they're talking about and lovingly guide you through the process of mixing your own organic skin care catering to your individual needs. The staff are so welcoming and kind, you will want to stay there forever.

Ovens Street Bakery (Brunswick)

Support Local Melbourne Oven Street Bakery Brunswick

Ovens Street Bakery is a favourite Saturday morning ritual of mine and for Brunswick locals, this bakery has become quite an institution. Waiting patiently in line, your mouth will water from the beautiful aromas of freshly baked breads and pastries. The owner Pip Hayes has Polish roots and does an exceptional rye sourdough which is still warm and steaming by the time I slice it open at home. If I’m feeling indulgent I’ll also pick up one of the delicious Polish donuts (paczek).

Green Horse (Northcote)

Support Local Melbourne Green Horse Northcote

Green Horse is one of my favourite stores that I love popping into when walking down Northcote's iconic High Street. They strive to source and stock fair-trade and sustainable brands only and have an impressive range of fashion, home-wares, make-up and accessories. This is my go-to store when buying gifts for others, I always know I’ll be able to find the perfect present for anyone.

We hope you enjoy shopping and supporting local as much as we do. Stay tuned for future editions as we feature other small, local businesses around Melbourne's suburbs.
