ESCAPE TO THE COUNTRY

ESCAPE TO THE COUNTRY

Earlier this year the Calmer Sutra team spent a long weekend out in the country. We explored around the Daylesford area eating nourishing food and filling our love (and tea!) cups.

A few months later and these wintery days and wearisome lockdowns have us daydreaming about road trips, open fires and spending time with loved ones.

So we asked the crew to compile a list of their top recommendations for when it’s time to escape the city for that much needed recharge.

Daylesford

EAT

The Virgin Cafe

The Virgin cafe is a beautiful and unique modern space. They use fresh seasonal produce with delicious rich breads and baked goods. Part café, part gallery, there’s always something to look at with the original artwork adorning the walls. On a sunny day enjoy your meal surrounded by their stunningly maintained gardens!

Larder Daylesford

Pop into this gorgeous and popular space as you meander along Vincent street. Their menu is exquisite but if you’ve already eaten you can enjoy a cup of Calmer chai whilst browsing their retail space which showcases local makers and sustainable goodies.

SHOP

Frances Pilley

You’re sure to pick up a treasure at Frances Pilley. Established in 2002, they pride themselves on providing exceptional products chosen carefully for their quality, beauty, individuality and luxury. Walk away with a local and deliciously scented soap or a beautifully designed cheese knife- I did!

STAY

The White House

Wow, this home! A pristinely maintained cottage from the 1850’s which is saturated in rich history at every turn. Each carefully selected artefact has a story and has been chosen to compliment the immaculate styling by Lynda Gardener. Soak in an original claw foot bath or snuggle up next to the open fire with a book. It really is the perfect escape in Daylesford.

DO

The Lavender Farm

There is lots to do at this iconic location just a short drive from Daylesford. There are 100 acres of gardens to stroll through and farm animals to visit- the kids will love it. Catch a history tour of the original homestead built in the 1860's and browse the large range of Handcrafted Aromatherapy products made right on the farm. If this has you spent then sit back and relax under the ash trees with a wood-fired pizza and a glass of Lavender Champagne! That’s right- Lavender Champagne!!

Trentham

EAT

Red Beard Bakery

You simply cannot go through Trentham without grabbing yourself a delicious loaf (or 5) of Red Beard sourdough. Built back in 1891 RedBeard’s working, wood-fired scotch oven is a rare and astonishing remnant of baking history. It weighs 75 tonnes and stores enough heat from one firing to bake 600 loaves!

If you are an intrigued baker Red Beard offers sourdough baking workshops where you will learn from the best and go home with your arms full of glorious baked goods.

SHOP

Take your time to roam up the main street of Trentham and stop into the cute knick knack stores that compliment the eccentricity of this small country town. The local traders are always up for a chat and you will no doubt find a hidden gem amongst it all.

DO

Trentham Falls - Swim

This place is absolutely breathtaking! A quick 2km drive from the idyllic town of Trentham these majestic falls are at their peak performance just after a downpour. Breathe in that fresh country air and let the serenity encompass you at Trentham Falls.

Woodend

SHOP

Nature’s Garden Organics

This local gem is perfect to stock up on organic groceries and specialty products. The staff are knowledgeable and forever helpful. While you’re there grab some of our infamous Super Spiced Cacao and handcrafted teas.

DO

Woodend Farmers Market

If you are passing through Woodend on the first Saturday of the month stop in at the local farmers market. You will find an abundance of local delights and delicious goodies. There is nothing quite as nourishing as supporting local farmers, growers and makers.
